Sosilawati murder: Three suspects remanded 6 more days

SEPANG: The Magistrate's Court here on Sunday allowed three suspects in the Banting murders to be remanded for six more days until Oct 1 to facilitate police investigations into the case.
Magistrate Hurman Hussain extended the remand order after the suspects, two of them lawyers, were brought to the court separately in three cars under tight police security at 9.35am. They left the court at 11.40am.
Ravi Nekoo, a lawyer representing the two lawyers, told reporters outside the court that the extended remand was to enable the police probe the disappearance of millionaire A. Muthuraja of India who had come to Malaysia on Jan 18.
The Banting murders refers to the deaths of cosmetics millionaire Datuk Sosilawati Lawiya, 47, her driver Kamaruddin Shamsudin, 44, CIMB Bank officer Noorhisham Mohammad, 38, and lawyer Ahmad Kamil Abdul Karim, 32, who were reported missing on Aug 30 after they had gone to Banting, Selangor, over a land deal.
On Sept 13, the police confirmed that the four had been killed, their bodies burnt and the ashes thrown into rivers in the vicinity of Ladang Gadong near Banting. The police subsequently detained eight suspects to facilitate investigations. Ravi told reporters the magistrate had asked one of his clients, who claimed to have been beaten by the police in custody, to lodge a police report.
"We will see him (the client) to lodge the report," he said.

cartoonist Zunar arrested

kUALA LUMPUR: Malaysiakini cartoonist Zulkiflee Anwar Ulhaque, better known as Zunar, was arrested Friday under the Sedition Act for publishing books considered ‘detrimental to public order’ and that could ‘influence the people to revolt against government policies’.

Police raided his office premises in Brickfields and seized about 70 copies of his latest book, Cartoon-o-phobia, due to be launched Friday night.

In the 4pm raid by a police team led by ASP Arikrishnan Apparau from the Brickfields district police headquarters, the new book and several cartoon drawings were seized.

City police chief DCP Datuk Muhammad Sabtu Osman confirmed the arrest and seizure of the items.
The new book, Cartoon-o-phobia features a collection of political cartoons that have appeared on the Malaysiakini website as well as unpublished cartoons and fresh artworks.

“The issues covered are the murder of Altantuya, the conspiracy against Anwar (Ibrahim), the PM’s wife, the loss of jet engines, the Scorpene that cannot dive, Sarawak, racism, corruption and waste of public funds, among others,

Published by Malaysiakini, Cartoon-o-phobia was to be launched at 8pm Friday at the Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall by former Perak mentri besar Nizar Jamaluddin.

On Malaysiakini’s website, Zunar said that despite his arrest, the launch would proceed Friday night.
He said that ‘Cartoon-o-phobia’ was chosen as the title to illustrate and reflect the fears of certain parties to cartoons.

“I am thinking of registering the term ‘Cartoon-o-phobia’ as a new word that carries the definition of ‘individuals or parties who are afraid of cartoons and use political power to act against cartoonists’,” he said.

The cartoonist said that the content of this latest book had more bite compared to his previous books.
Zunar’s three previous books - 1 Funny Malaysia, Perak Darul Kartun and Isu Dalam Kartun were banned by the Home Ministry but he had earlier told Malaysiakini that he was willing to take the risk in releasing this new book.

Sosilawati murder: Usharani hands mobile phone, documents to cops (Updated)

KUALA LUMPUR: S. Usharani, the second wife of missing Indian millionaire A. Muthuraja, handed her mobile phone, purportedly containing two recorded conversations with a policeman and the main suspect in the suspected murder of cosmetics millionaire Datuk Sosilawati Lawiya, to Bukit Aman on Friday.
She was accompanied by Kapar MP S. Manikavasagam.
In one of the conversations, the main suspect had allegedly told her that he had lodged a complaint to the police over Mutharaja’s disappearance.
“I called him to ask about my husband and he told me that there was a missing person report lodged but did not say who lodged the report,” said Usharani, 24, who had flown in from Chennai to assist police in their investigations.
One of the recordings was purportedly of one "ASP Suresh" demanding RM1mil for the release of her husband.
Manikavasagam said they also handed to police documents, including a habeas corpus filed in Chennai requesting the court to assist in searching for her husband, and letters sent to the Malaysian police and Indian High Commission here.
Usharani said that Mutharaja's parents would be coming to Malaysia soon to assist police in their investigations.
"They will be giving their DNA," she said, adding, however, that she did know when they would get here.
Manikavasagam also claimed that two families had contacted him Thursday over the disappearance of two family members, who, they claimed, had met the main suspect over land deals.
He said he would only reveal the details to the police after the current case was solved.
Mutharaja went missing on Jan 18 and his wife filed a missing person report in September. His case jumped to prominence after police began investigating Sosilawati, 47, and three others — lawyer Ahmad Kamil Abdul Karim, 32, CIMB Bank officer Noorhisham Mohammad, 38, and driver Kamarudin Shansudin, 44, who went missing on Aug 30.
Police believe they had been bludgeoned to death in a farm near Banting, their bodies burnt and the ashes strewn in a nearby river.
Eight suspects have been detained, among them, two lawyer brothers.
Police believe that a number of other missing persons might be linked to the two lawyer brothers.
Meanwhile, in Banting, police, accompanied by a forensics team, returned on Friday to the farm.
Five suspects, clad in orange attire, including the suspected mastermind, were taken in, too, at 2.20pm
At 5.20pm police, the forensics team and the suspects left in nine vehicles.

fashion faceoff: Ashley vs Blake

OK, OK, so we know both Blake Lively and Ashley Greene donned the Antonio Berardi frock in different colors, but no matter if it's black or white, it's still essentially the same gown that our ladies wore. So for the purposes of our good ol' fashion battle, it's game on!
Blake Lively in Boston, September 14, 2010.
Ashley Greene in Los Angeles, May 13, 2010.
Ashley Greene rocked a cream version of the lingerie-esque Berardi dress at the 12th Annual Young Hollywood Awards. The "Twilight" starlet accessorized with peep-toe heelsthat matched the black lace detail on her gown, chunky hoop earrings, and a loose updo.

Just last week, Blake Lively modeled a black version of the same form-fitting gown to the premiere of her new film "The Town" in Boston. Mixing things up, the "Gossip Girl" blonde sported nude Elizabeth & James platform pumps, drop earrings, and a chunky cocktail ring. A sleek hairstyle completed her look.

Ashley's cream frock was definitely more attention-grabbing, and the 23-year-old really brought out her sexy side with the exposed bodice detail. Lively kept her black edition more zipped up, which lent her dress a more conservative vibe. So ... who wore it better?

baby born with 16 toes

Girl posts public birthday party invite on Facebook, gets 21,000 replies

Word to the wise, folks: If you’re planning on inviting a small circle of your pals to a party at your place, make sure to uncheck the little box next to the "anyone can view and RSVP" setting before clicking the "Create Event" button.
Rebecca Javeleau, 14, of Herdfordshire, England, learned that lesson the hard way after the birthday party invitation she posted on Facebook got a few more replies than she’d been expecting.

According to the Daily Telegraph, Javeleau got a jaw-dropping 21,000 RSVPs from Facebook users around the globe — including from such (fake) celebs as Justin Bieber and Stephen Hawking — all because the (now-freaked-out) teenager had forgotten to mark the Facebook event for her 15th birthday as a private affair.

Facebook promptly took down the public page for Javeleau’s event, but that hasn’t stopped Facebook users from creating their own fan pages for the party, like this one. "HER PARTY WILL GO DOWN IN HISTORY," promises the info section on the page, which has raked in more than 1,200 "likes" and wall posts from random users asking for directions.

Rather than calling the bakery to order another cake and more napkins, Javeleau’s worried mother promptly nixed the party (sorry, Rebecca), revoked the girl’s Internet privileges (harsh), and even called the police, who are said to be stepping up their patrols in case a swarm of Facebook pranksters decide to show up on the embarrassed teen’s doorstep, according to the Telegraph story.

Rebecca, whose cautionary tale also made CBS's "Daily Show" (check out the video here), isn’t the first hapless Facebook user to get more than she bargained for after posting a party invite on the site.

The Telegraph reported in February that more than 50 destructive gatecrashers descended on a home near Liverpool after a 15-year-old girl posted a Facebook invite for a small shindig.

The paper (which must have a writer dedicated to the "Facebook party crashers" beat) also told of a chaotic 2008 party crashed by about 100 "revelers" — although, to be fair, the cops in that case said it wasn’t clear whether the rampage was "Facebook-related." (And let’s face it: The phenomenon of teen parties gone disastrously awry pre-dates the Facebook era by a few decades.)

Earlier this year, a Facebook invite for a small birthday party in Australia drew an astounding 60,000 RSVPs, not to mention a slew of fan pages, a Twitter feed and even a T-shirt — that is, before the whole thing wasrevealed to be an elaborate hoax. Oh well.

Of course, sometimes a flood of unintended attention on Facebook can be a good thing, as one writer found out after a fan page for his book amassed 692,000 fans in only a few months. Unfortunately for the author, it turned out that Facebook users were more turned on by the catchy title of the book — "Shut Up, I’m Talking" — than for the book itself, which despite all its unexpected fans has yet to become a bestseller.

Anyway, the moral of the story? Check the privacy settings on your next Facebook event invite before you post it — and remember, if your list of Facebook friends includes hundreds of random folks you’ve hardly even met, don’t be surprised if you see a few extra faces at the next meeting of your Facebook-advertised book club.
